ARTIVISM WORKSHOP #1
STOP LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY! PROTECT AMAGER FÆLLED!
03.2020
ARTIVISM WORKSHOPS In XR we want to communicate about the climate and biodiversity crisis in a beautiful, compelling and creative way! Therefore, we are launching a series of workshops where we can develop and explore different ideas of how to do creative activism, or artivism. The concept is to have a workshop where we work on an idea for an action, and then execute it shortly thereafter. In this way there will be a short way from idea to action, and we can test different ideas quickly and after this develop on them further. We will invite different external organizers to present a case, an idea for an action or a way of working with artivism. Then we will discuss the proposal/ideas and develop on them further and finally enter into a creative process where we work with materials to prepare for an actual action. We will go through different topics and will start off exploring the question “How to do activism in a less anthropocentric (human-centered) way?” over the course of several workshops.
We kick off the new creative workshop series of XR with an action criticizing the building plans at Amager Fælled! Extinction Rebellion DK’s second demand for the government is both to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero and halt the loss of biodiversity by 2025. There is such limited space for wild nature in Denmark that it makes absolutely no sense to build on one of the very few wild areas in our capital. The newly published redlist from Aarhus University shows that a large part of Denmark’s wild species are in risk of extinction. Danish politicians are (luckily) speaking of more space for wild nature, but what is happening in Copenhagen? AMAGER FÆLLED At this workshop Frej from Amager Fælleds Venner and Embassy of the Species CPH will join us and tell about the case at Amager Fælled. The municipality, By og Havn and PensionDanmark have plans to build a town with 2,000 apartments at the natural area Amager Fælled and claim this will INCREASE biodiversity in the area! Scientists and biologists have called this out as an extreme case of greenwashing. We will hear in more detail what is the history of the struggle for conserving the area and what the impact on biodiversity would be according to biologists at the workshop. Already now By og Havn is making tests in the area, scaring other species away. We will present an idea for an action, discuss it together and prepare for the action. Materials will be provided. This is a specific action to explore questions of how to give a voice to non-human beings, and how to do activism in a less anthropocentric way. We want to do this in a creative and beautiful way. Everybody is welcome to join the workshop, you don’t need to be a part of XR.
